Periodic Table of Heavy Metals - Science meets RAWK!

If they had this sort of scientific table in college Chemistry, I doubt I would have needed that tutor.

Available for sale for a mere $25.  Makes me wish I had a dorm room to hang it in.  Or a finished basement.

I love this.  My only complaint is the legend at the bottom. Some of the blues are too close in value and are difficult to differentiate.  It probably would be easier to discern in its printed, 18x24 inch glory.

Love the symbols - Oz for Black Sabbath!  Mü for Motley Crue!

I don't think I realized there were so many sub-genres of metal.  Are these official or just the designer's take?  Cause I'm not sure if Def Leppard should be with Iron Maiden and not in Glam Metal.  My favorite of course is Glam Metal followed by Alternative, Thrash and Proto (whatever that means).  But some were missing.  No NY Dolls?  No Faith No More?  No Trixter?  No Creed?  They included newer bands like Alterbridge, but no bands like Theory of a Deadman or Seether or Shinedown or Hinder.  And I question the inclusion of some as "metal" bands - Grand Funk Railroad?  And Faster Pussycat just plain sucks. I saw them live in concert so I can say that.

Hmmm..maybe I'll have to make my own.  Add that to the pile o' personal projects.....  ; )  Until then, I've got a whole new list of bands to explore.

Yago Hortal - Color Happiness

Found out about this new artist today: Yago Hortal

His work is beautiful.  I'm not a huge fan of modern art, but his pieces are hypnotizing, mesmerizing.  Some of them take on motion and remind me of photographs of things being dropped into water:

This one looks like a gorgeous tidal wave of color:

Others are just swirly color goodness:

These look like they were fun to make.  Like he dropped a lot of color on the canvas, and then went to town with a squeegee.  I might have to try my hand at this.

Carrying a Torch

Hey!  Long time no post....not that anyone cares....

Y'all (all two of you, if I'm even lucky to have that many readers) know about my fascination with all things Olympic. I came across this gorgeous gallery in the NY Times:

Passing the Torch: An Evolution of Form

How could I have missed that?  Maybe because it was listed in the Sports section.  That's part of the paper that is the first to be thrown away.  Avoid that crap like the plague.  Probably because ESPN seems to be on 24/7 in my house - that is in between Nickelodeon, the Disney channel, and the History channel.  But anyway, shouldn't this really have been under Arts & Design?

I've contemplated Olympic logo design and Olympic medal design on this blog.  Didn't give much thought to the torches.  The IOC doesn't miss a trick.  Should've known to think of the torch too.

Rolling over each torch brings up a little detail regarding the torch and/or its design.

Being into branding, while not one of my favorite designs, I like that Mexico City's torch tied in with the logo of that year:

This one just makes me think "WTF???!"  How awkward must that have been to carry?

This is so interesting to me because you not only have to create something visually unique and stunning, but also functional as a torch, and something that can be easily carried without weighing too much.  Or, like Winter 1994 Lillehammer, be wind resistant so that it could be used by a ski jumper.

It is interesting to me that after looking at all of them, my favorite is this one with a simple, classic design:

I'm really thinking that a fun portfolio project for me might to be to design a whole Olympic package - logo to medal to torch to even uniform.  Now if I could just find some time........

Nic Cage As Everyone

I love stuff that pokes fun at people who take themselves too seriously.  And Nicolas Cage definitely seems to take himself too seriously (helloooo, pyramid tomb anyone?)!

A lot of these are just bad, but there are some really funny ones in there:

Nic Cage As Everyone

Makes me want to go home and make one.  Mean?  I don't think so.  If I were a celeb, I think I'd be flattered.  I'd hope I'd be the kind that can laugh at myself, a la

As Nikki Sixx - this is actually a believable photoshop

As Zach Braff

Speaking of "taking ourselves too seriously"...

And as another who takes themselves too seriously, Celine Dion

He's Rick James, Bitch!

Too Awesome Not to Post Now That We've Survived the Rapture

In honor of surviving the passing of "Raptor Jesus Day 2011", I had to post these. These crack me the heck up. Esp the first one.

NOTE: I did not create and I do not claim the right to any of these pictures.

Art Exhibition for the Geek Inside

Woot!

This friggin' rocks.

The Art of Video Games

This speaks to the geek in me.  So many days of my childhood spent playing Pacman and Pitfall on the Atari 2600, and later Super Mario Brothers and the many games of the Sim City franchise. Ahh...sweet sweet video games.

I remember when these graphics:

Seemed so advanced and blew my mind.

I'm sorry I missed the voting.  The curators solicited votes from the online community to determine which games would be displayed in the exhibition. Here's a fully immersible 360 degree video game called Titanic: Adventure out of Time for the PC that I used to play all of the time (circa 1997-1999) and loved the visuals. Apparently, there is still even a blog about the game.

This brings justification to me. To the professor in the early 1990s who told me there was no correlation between a Computer Science major and an Art major, I say, SUCK IT!

And while we're talkin' 'bout video games.....Best Birthday Cakes EVAHHHH:
